Jonah in the Fish

Does the experience of Jonah in the belly of the fish prove the dead are conscious in Sheol?

Some say Jonah’s prayer from the belly of the fish (Jonah 2), spoken of as “sheol”, proves that the dead are in fact conscious in the afterlife. Clearly, however, Jonah is using a figure of speech, calling the belly of the fish his “grave” (Jonah 2:2) and speaking as if he were already dead. He was not actually dead. To draw from this text any conclusion as to the condition of those who are actually dead is to take the text out of context.
